What is a skills matrix?

A skills matrix (or training matrix) is a grid of people and skills. It shows at a glance who can do each job, who is still learning, and which jobs depend on too few people. That makes it a key visual management tool for planning cover, holidays and training.

This one uses the ILUO levels from Toyota. The circle fills a quarter at a time as someone learns.

How to use it

  1. Add your people and the jobs or skills that matter.
  2. Set a target for each skill: how many people must be able to do it alone.
  3. Fill in the circles honestly, with the team.
  4. Red and amber totals show where to train next.
  5. Print it, put it on the board, and update it every month.
